How to Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month

Have you let a busy schedule and building stress keep you from prioritizing your health? Have you been neglecting the things that bring you joy? Does it feel as though your wellness routine has become a thing of the past? It may be time for a reset, and Mental Health Awareness Month offers the perfect opportunity to return to maintaining your overall wellbeing.

Whether you’re looking to mix up your wellness routine or you’re just beginning your mental health journey, these tips for prioritizing your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing are beneficial during this month and all year long.

Covering the Basics

First thing’s first, let’s go over the basics. And while these tasks may seem fairly simple and self-explanatory, ensuring you give proper attention to each one in your daily routine is the first step toward good health. Each day, make sure you’re getting adequate rest, eating filling and nutritious meals, and drinking plenty of water.

If you begin to find that you aren’t getting enough out of your normal wellness routine, it may be time for a change. That change could be mixing up your routine with new exercises, updating your weekly menu with fun new recipes, or maintaining a strict sleep schedule. But if you still feel that your physical, mental, and/or emotional wellbeing are suffering, never be afraid or ashamed to seek professional help. Therapy and prescribed medication combined with a wellness routine that works for you can be just the thing you need to feel more like yourself again.

Beginning with Physical Health

We may be celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month, but taking care of your body is an essential part of building an overall wellness routine. A happy and healthy body and good mental health go hand-in-hand, and we have some suggestions to get you started on the right track to achieving both.

One of the three pillars of the Wim Hof Method, cold therapy has a myriad of both physical and mental health benefits. Starting your day with a cold shower can reduce stress, promote better focus throughout the day, and even stimulate your immune system. We’ve all heard it: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But we definitely don’t always incorporate a balanced breakfast into our daily routines. Hectic schedules make it increasingly easy to skip the morning meal altogether, but forgetting breakfast can leave you feeling sluggish and unmotivated later in the day. You should also be sure to follow your breakfast with two more meals that are packed with the proper nutrients to keep you feeling physically and emotionally satisfied all day long. Kaiser Permanente shares its recommendations for mood- and energy-boosting breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

Exercise might seem like another simple solution, but your diet and exercise routine work together to benefit your overall physical health. If you aren’t eating enough during the day, you won’t have enough energy to get your body moving. On the other hand, exercising on an empty stomach can burn energy in your body that isn’t being replenished with regular meals.

It’s always a good idea to finish the day with a good night’s rest. A lack of sleep can be detrimental to your immune system and cognitive function and can even put you at risk for unhealthy weight gain. A regular sleep schedule and nighttime relaxation routine provides an essential daily physical and mental reset. Plus, it will ensure you wake up each morning feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle another day.

Promoting Everyday Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Once you’ve started implementing some of the above physical changes into your wellness routine, you’ll most likely notice that they also translate to good mental health. That’s why our first tip for focusing on your mental and emotional wellbeing is trying yoga. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to tackle physical and mental health all at once.

If you find yourself turning to exercise for stress relief but aren’t feeling like lifting weights is calming you down, yoga may be right for you. Yoga improves your balance and flexibility and can relieve aching joints. It’s also an effective way to reduce stress, boost your energy, and improve your mood. But don’t worry if you’re a beginner and you aren’t ready to sign up for a class or commit to a gym membership. You can start in the comfort of your own home by tuning in to Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.

Meditation is another great addition to your routine and an effective way to unwind as soon as you begin to feel stress and anxiety creeping in. Making time to slow down and clear your mind for even a few minutes a day will help bring a sense of calm and tranquility. While meditating with no prior experience can seem intimidating, there are plenty of free resources online to get you started. Sarah Blondin’s Live Awake podcast features guided meditations of different lengths to relax your mind and body.

Remember You Aren’t Alone

It can certainly feel overwhelming to try and attempt an overhaul of your mental and physical health by yourself. You should never feel as though you can’t seek help from your peers or even a professional if you’re unsure of your next steps in your mental health journey. However, if you don’t feel that therapy is right for you or you’re not yet comfortable sharing your mental health journey with others, try listening to a podcast that promotes good mental health. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee’s Feel Better, Live More podcast is a great place to start. Listeners can find topics such as training your mind for peace and purpose, how to be your own therapist, the secret to overcoming any obstacle in life, and more.
